The Black Londoners Forum
PRESS RELEASE
Black Londoners demand Westminster Council rethink over Nelson Mandela Stature.
Black Londoners have condemned the decision not to have the stature of Nelson Mandela to be placed in Trafalgar Square as petty party politics that borders on racism.
The Black Londoners Forum - the largest BME group membership in the capital - has demanded that Westminster Council rethink and overturn their decision.
The organisation will be urging its members and the wider public to demonstrate on Thursday 29th at 9.30am outside 101 Orchardson Street NW8 8EA.
Simon Woolley, Chair of the Black Londoners Forum, comments:
"It is unbelievable how anyone could decline having such a world icon in Trafalgar Square. Nelson Mandela is perhaps the only living person who is admired by both Black and White, rich and poor and across all religious divides. In celebrating Nelson Mandela in Trafalgar Square, we also celebrate Britain's role in bringing down apartheid. Londoners will be forced to conclude that the decision of Westminster Council not to have the statue is racially motivated. We hope that the planning appeal will recognise the huge public support for this statue."
The Black Londoners Forum are calling a demonstration on Thursday 29th September, at 9.00am, outside the planning inquiry hearing: 101 Orchardson Street, London, NW8 8EA.
.
Ends/
Notes to editors:
London Mayor Ken Livingstone and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah are expected to attend on Thursday 29th September, arriving at 9.30am. Hearing starts at 10am.
Demonstrators are expected to hold placards in support of the statue.
Simon Woolley will be available for interview from 9am outside the hearing.
